Greetings & Basics
Bonjour
Bonjour is the standard way to say hello in French. It is used in the morning and in the afternoon.
Ça va ? / Vous allez bien / Comment allez vous ?
When greeting people, it is common to ask how they are doing :
- Vous allez bien ? / Comment allez vous ? = how are you ? polite
- Ça va ? = how are you ? friendly
Je m’appelle…
To introduce yourself, simply say :
Je m’appelle… = My name is… / I’m…
- Je m’appelle Daniel. = My name is Daniel.
Comment vous vous appelez ? / Comment tu t’appelles ?
If you want to ask someone’s name, you can say :
Comment vous vous appelez ? = What is your name ? (polite)
Comment tu t’appelles ? = What is your name ? (friendly)
Politeness is important in French and there is one simple rule : if you don’t know the person or if you’re not close to them, always use the polite way !
- A: Comment vous vous appelez ? = What is your name ?
- B: Je m’appelle John et vous ? = I’m John, what about you ?
- A: Comment tu t’appelles ? = what is your name ?
- B: Je m’appelle Sara et toi ? = My name is Sara and you ?
Au revoir
When you want to say goodbye you can simply say : au revoir !
Oui
Oui means yes. People naturally say « oui » to answer everyday questions :
- A: Bonjour ! Vous allez bien ? = Hello, how are you ?
- B: Oui, je vais bien, et vous ? = (Yes) good, how about you ?
- A: Vous êtes d’origine anglaise ? = Are you English ?
- B: Oui. = Yes (I am).
Non
Non means no.
- A: Vous êtes français ? = Are you French ?
- B: Non. = No (I am not).
Merci / Merci beaucoup
To say thank you you can say merci. You can also say merci beaucoup (= thanks a lot !)
S’il vous plaît / S’il te plaît
S’il vous plaît means please in French. With friends or people you know, you can say s’il te plaît.
- L’addition, s’il vous plaît. = the bill, please. (at a restaurant)
- Tu peux m’aider, s’il te plaît ? = can you help me, please ? (friendly way)
Getting around
Où est ?…
To ask for directions, you can say :
Où est… ? = where is…?
- Où est la gare ? = where is the station ?
- Où est le distributeur de billets ? = where is the ATM ?
- Où est le musée ? = where is the museum ?
- Où est l’entrée ? = where is the entrance ?
Je cherche…
When you are lost and looking for a place, you can say :
Je cherche = I’m looking for…
- Je cherche une pharmacie = I’m looking for a pharmacy.
- Je cherche la sortie = I’m looking for the exit.
- Je cherche un travail = I’m looking for a job.
Comment je peux aller… ?
If you don’t know how to go to a place, you can simply ask :
Comment je peux aller…? = How can I go to… ?
- A: Excusez-moi, comment je peux aller à la gare ? = Excuse me, how can I go to the station ?
- B: C’est tout droit, marchez quelques minutes ! = it’s straight ahead, just keep walking for a few minutes.
Restaurants, cafes, shopping
Je voudrais…
« Je voudrais » is a polite way to order/buy something :
- Je voudrais deux croissants, s’il vous plaît. = I’d like two croissants, please.
- Je voudrais un ticket de bus, s’il vous plaît. = Could I get a bus ticket, please ?
Combien ça coûte ?
Want to know the price of something ? Simply ask :
Combien ça coûte ? = How much is it ?
- A: Combien ça coûte s’il vous plaît ? = How much is it, please ?
- B: Un euro cinquante = 1€50.
Je peux payer… ?
If you’re not sure whether you can pay by card or cash, just ask :
Je peux payer… ? = Can I pay… ?
- Je peux payer par carte ? = Can I pay by card ?
- Je peux payer en espèces ? = Can I pay in cash ?
C’est gratuit / payant ?
Not sure if something is free ?
C’est gratuit ? = is it free ?

Phrases & questions
Vous parlez anglais ?
To ask if someone speaks English, you can say :
Vous parlez anglais ? = Do you speak english ?
- A: Vous parlez anglais ? = Do you speak english ?
- B: Non, désolé. = No, sorry.

- B: Oui, un petit peu. = Yes, a little.
Qu’est-ce que vous recommandez ?
You can use Qu’est-ce que vous recommandez ? when you can’t decide what to order or buy.
- A: Qu’est-ce que vous recommandez ? = What do you recommend ?
- B: Je vous suggère le plat du jour. = I recommend the daily special.
- A: Qu’est-ce que vous recommandez ? = What do you recommend ?

When asking for help, you can say :
